Horst P. Horst (1906 - 1999) is one of the most revered and important fashion photographers of the 20th century.
Horst began his six decade long association with Vogue in 1931 - by the end of the decade he had published in all 3 versions, on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to editorial and advertising Horst also shot all the luminaries of the era including Marlene Dietrich, Noël Coward, Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli to mention a few.
Horst was prolific and shot an array of subjects of his own initiative and for assorted clients. While elements of Surrealism and classicism appear in his work, he is most revered for his images of women and fashion.
Pictured here is one of Horst's favorite muses the Swedish model Lisa Fonssagrives.
She would appear in numerous images in Vogue and would later marry Irving Penn.
This image appeared in Vogue in the late 1930's - the hat was Balenciaga, gloves by Boucheron, jewels from Cartier.
